Cha Cha: Flirting For Fun

Cha Cha: Flirting For FunCha-cha-cha or cha cha is the fireworks of the Latin modern dancing style. Cha cha is a Cuban dance, with Spanish and African influences put together within the Latin beat — an explosive mixture for any dance floor.

Cha cha is danced in 4/4 time, the last beat split into two, so it takes five steps within four beats of music. Cha cha rhythm may be compared to slowed mambo rhythm or fastened rumba rhythm, yet, it’s undoubtedly unique.

Cha cha is done in small steps, lots of hip movement, with quick and sharp accents. The famous cha cha trick is the lady’s never-ending row of rotations facing the partner and back to the audience. It is as if she is not sure whether her man is good enough. In fact, cha cha is about acquaintances, not about relationships.

As the stirring music begins, both the man and the woman start to pose, trying to please each other. However, cha cha is meant to be a social dance, so none of the partners forget about other possible admirers. Now the whole dance becomes a mischievous and a joyful flirt, a playful competition of deserved attention. It is not about romantic feelings, no ties or bonds, just showing off for fun.

Cha cha is one of the five Latin dances in international ballroom dancing competitions, and probably one of the most complex. That’s why cha cha is usually danced by professionals, who manage all the characteristic Cuban motion — sharp, spicy and sensual at the same time.
