The legendary rock/metal band Anathema is going to release a new album this year. According to metalstorm.ee, the CD release date is May 17, 2010.
Anathema is one of those bands that have gone through several changes. But the surprising thing about Anathema is that they never lost their unique face–they still manage to create a unique atmosphere with their music.
When they started, Anathema was a doom/death metal band. Now they are a progressive rock band. This radical change of their style brought to a wave of resentment among metal lovers.
But I think that it doesn’t matter what your genre is. It is far more important to create a meaningful and emotional music. And Anathema manages to do this. If they needed to change their style to remain themselves, so be it. Though as for me, I am more addicted to their earlier works in doom metal style, but I can’t reject their new works.
The music of Anathema is calming, passionate, beautiful and romantic. It is full of love and longing. It is extremely emotional, that’s why I love listening to it when my own feelings overflow. Maybe to some people Anathema’s music can seem sad and depressive, but for me it is deep and meaningful. It reflects the other side of life and love. The sad, depressive, desperate side, but we all know that it exists. Some people try to run away from it. Anathema turns to it and makes it look beautiful. I guess that’s why I love Anathema’s music so much: it makes you look at the sadder side of the life from another point, it makes you see how beautiful it is, and how empty our lives would be without it.
Anathema has had many rises and falls. Right now they don’t have a record label, and they recorded and distributed their latest album by themselves.
I guess the upcoming album, the working name of which is “Horizons,” will be as beautiful as Anathema’s previous work. Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree will mix the album, so maybe it will have some psychedelic atmosphere.
And good news for the fans of Ville Valo from HIM: according to Metal Hammer magazine, he is going to record vocals for one song on Anathema’s new album. The song is called “Angels Walk Among Us.”
I am looking forward to listening to the whole album, and I hope it will have the beautiful music and the emotional atmosphere that have become Anathema’s visit card during all these years.
