If you are a fan of The Wizard of Oz, then you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that there is a prequel to this beloved story, centering on how the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda and Elphaba respectively, came to be.
Could any of us have really imagined that these two witches were once friends? “Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz” tells the tale of how these two became friends and later, witches. Currently it is showing in several cities in the US and Wicked tickets are widely available.
“Wicked” is based on the novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire. The songs and lyrics were penned by Stephen Schwartz.
The musical is a tell-all about the friendship of Elphaba and Glinda, from when they met in the Land of Oz. They begin as good friends, oddly enough, but have completely different characters. Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, is born with green skin and as a result she has a very hard childhood, full of difficulties and obstacles. She is a smart but hot tempered person, while Glinda, the future Good Witch of the North, is lovely, pretty, honest and very popular. But their friendship was doomed from the beginning. The difference of their characters finally leads to their separation. The story of their relationship, and the dissolution of, is the main subject of the musical.
The musical has achieved acclaim and numerous awards, including 3 Tony Awards (Best Leading Actress, Best Scenic Design and Best Costume design) and six Drama Desk Awards.
While the musical debuted in 2003, it is definitely not old news and still continues to attract a wide array of audiences from all parts of the world. Wicked tickets are today among the best-selling theater tickets. The continued packed houses and demand for tickets promise a bright and rosy future and long-lasting popularity for the “Wicked” witches.
